ISL is shareware. The registration fee is $25 per platform.
California users need to include appropriate sales tax (8.25% as of this
writing, for a grand total of $27.06). I may at some point in the future
be forced to add a per-upgrade fee for postage, but for now the volume is
so low it hardly matters.
In fact, I prefer to send out updates electronically. If you have a stable
email address and would like to get them this way, include said email address
with your registration.
There are two versions of ISL now: a freely distributable (FD) one, and
a registered one. If you got this package bundled with some other package
(e.g., Humanoid), you are not a registered user and do not have the complete
version. If you got it from an archive site, you are not a registered user
and do not have the complete version. If you got it from a BBS or a CD-ROM,
you are not a registered user and do not have the complete version. Nobody
but me, personally is legally allowed to distribute the registered version.
The only way to get the complete version is directly from me, after sending
in your $25.
The FD version is slightly crippled. Specifically, the restage program will
silently ignore effects. No errors will be produced, and the stage will work,
it will just have it's effects stripped. destage does generate the ASCII form
of the effects so that you can see what they look like. If you aren't using
effects in your animation, the FD version will do everything you need.
There are several reasons why I did it this way:
1: Registration fees to date have not even covered my on-going Imagine
upgrades. This is downright pathetic, given the amount of work I've put
into it and the positive feedback I've gotten on it. Put your money where
your mouth is, guys!
2: My company, Grizzly Bear Labs, is starting to need more of my time. If I
am going to ever become independent of my current day job, I need to get
cracking on a profitable product. ISL sure doesn't appear to be one of those.
The time I spend on ISL directly impacts other GBL development. If I am to
continue to maintain and enhance it, I need some justification for doing so.
Registration fees for ISL are reported to the IRS and the California Franchise
Tax Board as GBL income. Since the amounts are so puny, I'm still running it
out of my personal checking account, so please continue to make checks out to
John Grieggs for now.
3: This is a lot of work.
4: Registration buys you a copy of either the Amiga or the PC version of
ISL, and free updates for the forseeable future. I don't really know what
this means yet, but it's certainly no less than the point where the current
version is fully debugged. Note that this is a further tightening of the
policy - register now before it gets worse still! :-) I think $25 is a more
than fair price for any useful program. In fact, it's much less than the cost
of a single Imagine upgrade! For a while there, your $25 registered you on both
platforms, and I'll honor that for the few that took advantage of it. New
registrations do not get this deal, and I reserve the right to increase the
registration fee in the future if it seems to make sense at the time. Take this
as a sign that waiting is bad.
